Durham, a small place

"Fifth day [Thursday, October 17, 1867] Have just come through Durham, a small place. Hope the citizens are religious for I saw the sign of 'Bible Depository'. Henry is filling a bedtick with new straw & Alson is watering the horses. Just before sunset--stopped to buy some corn, paid 60 cts a bushel. Night. We are camping in a beautiful grove in a creek bottom 2 miles west of LaHarp. We had a good deal of wind today & have been nearly enveloped in dust. Clear dry weather... O what a bright fire they have just made with brush. It eclipses the lantern till we have no need of it. Henry and Alson are setting the tub up & tightening the hoops, it got so dry the staves fell down.
Bought a do
llars worth of sugar & 50 cts worth of coffee & gave 15 cts for a pocket looking glass."

As Ann wrote, Durham certainly is "a small place." It seemed to be just a road and a town hall! La Harpe, on the other hand, is a
thriving community that boasts a house where Lincoln slept.
