July 4th in the Midwest

The Midwest is decidedly patriotic! American flags fly in every town, no matter the size, and some cities have rimmed their central squares or main streets with flags. While eating lunch at a cafe in Casey, IA, Chuck, the owner, told us about "Freedom Rock" just a few miles east. I know you have probably all seen it in various emails. Well, the artist lives in the area and changes the paintings every year. It was amazing to see the actual Freedom Rock on Highway 25! He also painted the wall in the cafe as well as the huge mural on the side of the building.

This evening, we watched the fireworks on
TV from Washington DC. The town where we are staying has a display at the park, but when we drove by earlier, we could see it was going to be a densely packed event.

Unlike many counties in California, fireworks for home use are legal, so we have seen a lot of families out in their yards with "safe & sane"
fireworks. [ha!]

I'm not sure how our Quaker ancestors marked Independence Day, but today in the Midwest it was thoroughly celebrated!
